Perforated Window Film for Your Vehicle Wraps

Perforated window film is a type of graphic vinyl that allows the person inside the vehicle to see-through, while appearing opaque from the outside. It’s not a high tech product, but rather a plain vinyl with a block-out layer and a series of perforations (holes) in it. All the major vinyl graphic manufacturers have their own brand of this film and popular one being 3M’s ContraVision.

Using the film is surprisingly expensive and can cost as much as four times that of regular vehicle wrapping film. This begs the questions “do I need to use this?” There are a few considerations when using perforated window film in your vehicle wraps.

1. Film Laminated Perforated Window Film – In order to use a cold film laminate for your window film, you’ll need optically clear laminate. This means you’ll need another roll of laminate to have in stock which not only will cost a premium, but you’ll rarely use. The major problem with this technique is because you have the perforated layer laminated with a clear top layer, when your squeegee over the film in certain areas you’ll have air bubbles trapped where the perforation holes are. Over time as these small air bubbles in the perforation are exposed to the sun, they will dry out, crack, and the panel will eventually need to be replaced.

2. Liquid or Non-Laminated Perforated Window Film – By simply not laminating or liquid laminating your perforated window film you can avoid the small the air bubbles that come with using a cold film technique. Optically clear vinyl laminate isn’t exactly as clear as glass anyway. A new problem appears if you follow this technique, of course if you don’t protect your print in any manner, in about 2 years your colors will fade and the print would be damaged by any number of things such as car wax. The major problem is the perforated holes will trap water droplets when it rains and become a hazard to driver, often providing no visibility.

3. No Perforated Window Film but Opting for Solid Vinyl – Using solid vinyl may best be suited for cargo vans where their drivers rely on their mirrors more than on typical passenger vehicles. Simply using the vehicle wrapping vinyl would be the easiest method of application and you’d also have the peace of mind that all the vinyl graphics are the same and will age at the same rate. Using this technique or designing with no windows installed on, can be a safer avenue to go down, but more savvy customers may demand a perforated window film product.

There’s no perfect way to complete your vehicle wraps using perforated window film, but use what’s right for you. I avoid using it where possible to avoid work coming back as a product failure and to limit any hazardous driving conditions.

High Efficiency Motor Oils for High Efficiency Hybrid Cars

The trend for motor oils has been steadily moving to lower viscosity oils for many years now. The use of 20W / 50 and 10W40 oils used to be the standard but these days both 5W / 30 and 5W / 20 have become common. Now we are seeing the use of 0W / 20 oils becoming prevalent, especially in highly fuel-efficient hybrid cars and trucks.

But what exactly do these numbers mean? When reading the information on a bottle of motor oil the top number indicates the oils viscosity. This is a measurement of how the oil flows at a given temperature measured in units called centiStokes (cSt). The bottom number with the "W" is its winter or cold weather rating and tells you how the oil flows at cold temperatures. The smaller the number in front of the "W the better the oil will flow when it is cold and the lower its point point generally is.

With the advent of EPA CAFE (corporate average fuel economy) requirements car makers started looking for any way possible to increase vehicle fuel economy. Since lower viscosity oils have inherently less drag and resistance to flow then heavier oils the trend had been lighter to more efficient oils. Lighter oils can significantly improve fuel economy, often by 2 to 3 miles per gallon compared to the old 40wt. and 50wt. oils once common and that's why we have seen the move to 20wt. Oils. Unfortunately, along with these early 20wt. Oils, came reduced wear protection.

One of the biggest problems related to the lighter viscosity oils being far more volatile. Many if not most early 5W / 20 and 0W / 20 petroleum motor oils were so volatile (meaning the lighter portions of the oil would boil off when the oil got hot leaving the heavier portions and causing the motor oil to thicken) that within one to two thousands of miles the oil had thickened into the 30wt. viscosity range. This reduced or eliminated any advantage in efficiency that had been gained by going to the lighter oil to begin with. Film strength of these lighter viscosity oil was also not as good and that wear protection was often very poor compared to higher viscosity motor oils.

With the advent of hybrid cars a few years ago 20wt. oil really started to come into its own. Today we are seeing more more use of synthetic and synthetic blend 20wt motor oils that offer all the protection once found in heavy viscosity motor oils Full synthetic motor oil has many times the film strength of a petroleum oil at any given viscosity. Also, synthetic oils with their uniform molecular structure are far less volatile and not near as likely to "cook" and change viscosity in the high temperatures of the modern pollution controlled engine. Full synthetic motor oils also flow far more readily and produce much less friction and drag inside of the engine and drive train than petroleum oils do and so lend themselves well to use in modern highly fuel efficient hybrid cars.

Make Sure Your Vehicle Is Ready for the DMV Road Test

Before your road test can begin at the DMV, the license examiner will perform a safety check on your vehicle. If your car is not mechanically sound, it's possible that you could fail your road test before you even turn the key. To ensure your vehicle is ready for the road test , here are some things to check:

  • Non-functional / defective doors and windows – Your door must shut up completely and your windows must roll up and down easily. In some areas, the driving license examiner is required to keep the window open just a bit for safety purposes.
  • Damaged / too-heavily-tinted windshield, windows – Damages such as cracks or window-tint that's too dark may obstruct vision during driving.
  • Non-functional / defective lights – All lights, including the tag light, and turn signals must work properly. Make sure you test them all before going to the DMV. Changing out a bulb is cheap and reliably easy.
  • Non-functional / defective / missing seat belts – Being properly buckled in seat belts is a requirement in ALL states.
  • Non-functional / defective windshield wipers / washer fluid nozzle – You have to be prepared for all kinds of weather. The examiner will ask you to activate your windshield wipers.
  • Non-functional / defective brakes – It's obvious that brakes have to work every time; especially in an emergency and emergency braking will be a part of your road test. Your examiner may also ask you to activate the emergency brake. Your emergency brake should be able to hold the car on a slow upgrade or hill.
  • Broken rearview mirror, side mirrors – To be aware of a driver's surroundings, these mirrors have to be able to show what driving conditions are like behind the vehicle.
  • Flat / over-inflated / defective / worn-out tires – The examiner will check your tires for proper inflation and tread wear. If there is any doubt, he or she will use a penny to check the depth of the tread. If you can see the top of Abe Lincoln's head, the tires are too worn.
  • Non-functional / defective horn, speedometer, fuel indicator – These are all required for safe operation of a vehicle. An inoperable speedometer will mean an automatic failure. Horns are necessary to warn another driver in case of an emergency. The examiner will ask you to tap your horn.
  • Obviously leaks / fumes coming out of the vehicle – A driver should be alerted if the vehicle leaves a trail of oil or produces harmful fumes that could enter the passenger compartment.

These are just some of the items that will be checked. Make sure your car is clean inside and out and that there are no objects in the window that could obscure a driver's vision. Make sure everything is in working order and you should sail right through the test.

What are the new hybrid cars that are available on the market?

Any car or vehicle that combines more than a single source of power can be called a hybrid vehicle.

Today most of the hybrid vehicles on the road combine gas and electricity to provide the power for the propulsion to the vehicle. Diesel-electric hybrids are the newcoming hybrid that offers even greater fuel efficiency with the new VW car being introduced to the American market. So how does this most popular vehicle hybrid (gas-electricity) work?

The basic principle behind the workings of this hybrid vehicle system lies in the combination of the two sources of power-a gas engine and a high powered battery both provide power for running the electric motor that runs the car. In hybrid cars the batteries do not need to be charged externally because they charge themselves by recapturing the energy that is generally lost when a vehicle decelerates or slows down.

Another seemingly obvious benefit is that they keep on the amount of fuel giving more miles per gallon of fuel as opposed to cars that run only on fuel. Even though in principle the workings of hybrid cars are the same (a combination of the gas engine with an electric motor working in harmony) the combination varies between different kinds of hybrids.

In some hybrid cars, when extra power is required, the electric motor is used only to provide assistance to the propulsion created by the fuel engine. The two functions (the electric motor and gas engine) have to take place separately as the electric motor can not work independently and the battery also can not get charged and provide power to the electric motor at the same time. The term given to these types of hybrid cars / vehicles is generally referred to as mild hybrids. Examples of cars that fall into this category are Honda Civic (2004 and 2005) hybrids and the Honda Insight.

On the other hand, once certain conditions are achieved, there are other kinds of hybrid cars where the electric motor, run by the battery can work independently of the gas engine. This happens mostly when the car is cruising at low speeds, once the car requires more power to run at higher speeds the gas engine takes over. The third phase where both systems work together is when the vehicle is traveling at very high speeds. Another benefit to this type of hybrid vehicles are known as the 'full hybrids' is that the battery can both get charged and provide power to the motor at the same time. Examples of cars that fall into this category are Ford Escape, Toyota Highlander and Honda Civic (2006 and above).

Currently most of the hybrid cars that are available, due to this still being developmental technology, cost as much as some of the most expensive cars on the market, this leaves them out of reach for most people. Until they start being commercially produced in large enough quantities to force the prices down they will then provide some benefit to the community. Another problem that is foreseen with these types of hybrid vehicles is the design of the batteries that have been built to last less than a 10 years. Not a very ecologically sound design!

Major Eugene P Hogan and the World War Two Jeep

Major Hogan in Hail To The Jeep (by A. Wade Wells) said that 'Jeep' is an old Army grease monkey term that was back to at least WWI and was used by shop mechanics in referring to any new motor vehicle received for a test . In recent years (during WW2), the word has been used specifically by the Armored Force but not in relation to the 1/4-ton. Rather it was used in relation to a 1/2-ton command car. Just when this generally used term was specifically applied to the vehicle it now describes is hard to say. Its popularity grows from its general use by the public.

Part of the above is often cited as appearing in a history of Jeep development for the Army's Quartermaster review in 1941. Major Hogan then a Lieutenant wrote two articles for Quartermaster Review during 1941. The first article was one page and it was entitled "The Bug "He said. The word "jeep" is not mentioned at all, however, "bug," "bantam," and "puddle-jumper" are listed. This article appeared in the March / April 1941 issue. The second article was called The Story of the Quarter-Ton – The Army's Smallest Car Known as a "Jeep." In this article there is no reference to "grease monkeys" or even from where the word jeep came from.

There is no notation but since Hogan is listed as a Major, this information may have come from Wells "investigation" (Hail To The Jeep) into the history of the jeep. He sent out little forms to various officers and men in order to find out what they knew about the jeep and its development.

A Review of The Volkswagen Cross Coupe TDI

With each vehicle that rolls out of the production line, a lot of focus is placed on the fuel economy techniques that have been instituted in the vehicle. Volkswagen has been seen as a vehicle manufacturer that does not differ in any way to the norm, and this can be clearly seen in the hybrid vehicle that they have in their line, the VW Cross Coupe TDI, a vehicle that comes in a build a power train that is merged, ensuring that the vehicle is targeted towards the green revolution, and making the world better.

The concept of the vehicle that was showcased at the 2012 Geneva Motor show is not new in any way as a similar concept had been showcased at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show. The main difference that is seen in this vehicle is that it comes in an efficient diesel engine and a cross over electric motor.

The Cross Concept showcased in Geneva also comes in VW's MQB (Modular Transverse Matrix) Chassis, a technology owned by VW. The exterior of the vehicle comes in a design that shows the true build of the VW Cross Coupe TDI, a design that has 5 doors and with sharply sloped angles on the vehicle.

The powertrain of the vehicle comes from two electric motors and a diesel turbocharged engine that kicks in when the electric power is depleted. The vehicle comes in a 7 speed dual clutch transmission system. One of the motors of the vehicle is attached to the front wheels. This gives the motor the function of either propelling the vehicle or even charging the vehicle's electric powertrain. The motor produces about 133 lb / ft of torque.

The other motor is located at the rear wheels producing about 199 lb / ft torque and is what is mainly used to power the vehicle. The transmission mode of the vehicle in the rear vehicle can come from the diesel engine or even from the electric motor. This can be via a 9.8 KWh lithium-ion battery installed in the vehicle or the 2.o liter diesel engine. The combined powertrain modes from the rear and front wheels produce about 295 lb / ft of torque, ad this is achieved through the MQB technology.

The vehicle comes in different driving modes such as Sport, Cross Coupe, a mode that produces maximum efficiency, an off-road mode, an E mode and a Charging mode. According to the VW, the Vehicle can clock a 0-60 mph at 6.5 seconds

There are several different driving modes for the Cross Coupe: City (for maximum efficiency), Sport, Off-Road, E-mode, and Charging. If the lithium-ion battery is charged, E-mode allows the crossover to drive for 28 miles and up to 75 mph on electrical power alone using the rear motor. (The diesel engine and front electric motor are disconnected from the drive axles.) In Sport mode, the diesel engine and both electric motors provide 516 lb-ft and all-wheel-drive, allowing the Cross Coupe to hit 60 mph in 6.5 seconds . A full tan of the vehicle that holds about 14.5 gallons is expected to drive about 800 miles, an amazing feat as this is combined with charging the batteries. A release date of the Cross Coupe has not yet been set yet, although this is expected to be really soon, especially after the showcasing of the vehicle.
